First Financial Institution in Malaysia to be Awarded with Energy Management Gold Standard (EMGS) Certification

AmBank Group is the first financial institution to be awarded with the Energy Management Gold Standard (EMGS) certification, where the bank received the 1-star certification for Menara AmBank on 17 May 2022.

Dato’ Sulaiman Mohd Tahir, Group Chief Executive Officer, AmBank Group said, “We are conscious in taking significant measures to manage our energy consumption more effectively. The group will continue to incorporate environmental, social and governance considerations in our strategies, business, consumption and procurement. We aim to be a financial institution which embraces sustainability and creating a positive impact for posterity.”

The Energy Management Gold Standard (EMGS) is a certification system delivered under the ASEAN Energy Management Scheme (AEMAS) based on excellence in energy management. Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (MGTC) has been appointed by the ASEAN Centre of Energy (ACE) as the certification body for EMGC in Malaysia. The EMGS 1-Star assessment requires 7 aspects to be assessed namely Management, Organization, Process, Information, Financial, Corporate Responsibility and Achievement.

Previously, AmBank has adopted the Green Electricity Tariff (GET) Programme offered by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) in efforts to reduce its carbon footprint for electricity consumption. Separately, The Bank has also purchased Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) from Sarawak Energy for its entire operations in Sarawak. Both initiatives aim to offset its scope 2 carbon emissions from by 96%.

AmBank has also established The Group Energy Policy which acts as the foundation for successful energy management across its premises. The policy amplifies the group’s commitment for responsible energy management and sustainable development.
