The Beginning
1975
Arab-Malaysian Development Bank, the first predecessor of today’s AmInvestment Bank was incorporated on 5 August 1975 as a joint venture between Malaysian Industrial Development Finance Berhad (55%), Arab Investments for Asia (Kuwait – 33%) and the National Commercial Bank (Saudi Arabia – 12%).

The Formative Days
1980
Tan Sri Azman Hashim came into the picture on 22 August 1982 when he purchased the 55% shareholding held by Malaysian Industrial Development Finance Berhad (MIDF) making him the major shareholder of AMDB. This gave him the foothold he needed in his chosen field. It didn’t take him long – later in the same year in fact, to acquire the remaining shareholdings held by the Arabs. From then as 100% owner, Tan Sri Azman Hashim and the Group were synonymous.
The Bank changed its name in December 1983 to Arab-Malaysian Merchant Bank Berhad (AMMB), a name by which it was known for nearly three decades until the second rebranding in June 2002.

The Steady Rise
1990
Incorporation of AMMB Holdings Berhad, as the vehicle for the implementation of a corporate restructuring scheme. Pursuant to the restructuring scheme, AMMB Holdings Berhad became the holding company of the Arab-Malaysian Banking Group, and assumed the listing status of AMMB.

The Global Partnership
2000
Then along came the tie-up with the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ANZ). ANZ a leading bank in Australia and the largest in New Zealand, began with a 19.17% stake in the AmBank Group. ANZ was firmly established in the region with operations in China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia. AmBank was seeking to leverage on their capabilities, presence and network in international banking. It envisaged the strategic tie up with ANZ would elevate the Group almost overnight in the perception of international banks, amounting to the most significant milestone.

The Now
2025
As we get ready to celebrate 50 years since our inception on 5 August 1975, we’re reminded of what’s driven us all these years: Winning Together. This idea of collective success has been at the heart of every achievement, challenge and milestone we've faced. It’s a nod to the amazing support and teamwork of our employees, customers and shareholders. Together, we’ve created a legacy of resilience, innovation and shared triumphs. We are Malaysians, and this is Malaysia Kita, a theme that complements our 50th Anniversary celebration.
